Palworld Breeding Guide 2026: Full Mechanics, Best Combos & How to Pass Skills
I spent 4 hours breeding Anubis thinking I needed a male and female of the same species. Then I learned any Pal can breed with any other Pal and the offspring is determined by a hidden 'breeding power' formula. I wasted 40 cakes. Don't waste yours.
How Palworld breeding actually works
Every Pal has a hidden 'breeding power' stat (not shown in-game — use paldeck.cc or paldb.cc to check). When you breed two Pals, the game averages their breeding power values, then finds the Pal whose breeding power is closest to that average. That Pal is the egg result.
Example: Penking (breeding power 520) + Bushi (breeding power 640) = average 580 → closest Pal is Anubis (breeding power 570). You can get Anubis at Level 20 instead of Level 47 by breeding Penking (caught near Sealed Realm of the Frozen Wings at Level 15) with Bushi (found near Sealed Realm of the Swordmaster at Level 23).
The formula is: (Parent A power + Parent B power) / 2 → round to nearest Pal power. NOT an average of species — it's purely the numeric power value. This means: Chikipi + Chikipi always = Chikipi (same power, average = same power, closest = Chikipi). But Chikipi + Jormuntide Ignis = something completely different because the average is halfway between 1500 and 10.
Breeding requirements
You need: Breeding Farm (Level 19 technology — 100 Wood, 50 Stone, 20 Fiber), one male and one female Pal (any species — they do NOT need to be the same species), Cake (1 per egg — made in Cooking Pot: 5 Flour + 8 Red Berries + 7 Milk + 8 Egg + 2 Honey). Assign the male + female to the Breeding Farm via the Pal Management panel, put Cake in the Breeding Farm chest, wait ~5 minutes for egg, move egg to Egg Incubator (Ancient Technology unlock at Level 7). Incubation time varies by egg size: Common egg ~2 hours, Large egg 4-6 hours, Huge egg 8-12 hours. Lower incubation time with heater/cooler next to incubator matching egg temperature preference.
Priority breeding combos (get endgame Pals 20+ levels early)
Anubis (Level 47 normally → Level 19 via breeding): Penking + Bushi. Also works: Incineram + Surfent, Arsox + Relaxaurus, Celaray + Pyrin. Anubis is the most important breed in the game — Handiwork 4 + Mining 3 transforms your base. Breed two the moment you unlock the Breeding Farm at Level 19.
Jormuntide Ignis (Level 45+ Wildlife Sanctuary → Level 25 via breeding): Blazehowl + Jormuntide. Catch Blazehowl near Mount Obsidian (Level 30) and Jormuntide at the lake near the Investigator's Fork (Level 35-40). Jormuntide Ignis is Kindling 4 — smelts ore faster than anything else.
Astegon (Level 40+ at No. 3 Wildlife Sanctuary → Level 35 via breeding): Anubis + Shadowbeak or Cryolinx + Helzephyr. Astegon is Mining 5 — the only Mining 5 Pal in the game. Worth the chain just for ore production.
Frostallion Noct (Legendary chain → Level 40 via breeding): Frostallion + Helzephyr. Frostallion is a Legendary catch at Level 50 — breed it with Helzephyr (Level 35+ desert/high-level areas) to get Frostallion Noct without catching a second legendary.
Shadowbeak (Level 45+ Wildlife Sanctuary → Level 35 via breeding): Kitsun + Astegon. Kitsun spawns at night near the Frostbound Mountains (Level 30+). This is the chain: catch Penking + Bushi → breed Anubis → breed Anubis + ??? → Astegon → breed Kitsun + Astegon → Shadowbeak.
How to pass passive skills (the real breeding endgame)
Pals caught in the wild have random passive skills. The 4 golden passives you want on every combat Pal: Legend (+20% Attack, +20% Defense, +15% movement speed — only on Legendary Pals by default, must be bred down), Musclehead (+30% Attack, -50% work speed — pure combat passive, breed from wild Musclehead Pals), Ferocious (+20% Attack — breed from wild Ferocious Pals), Burly Body (+20% Defense — breed from wild Burly Body Pals).
Passive skill inheritance: offspring has a chance (roughly 50-70% per passive per parent slot) to inherit each of the parents' passive skills. If both parents have Legend, the offspring has about 85% chance to inherit Legend. If one parent has 4 passives and the other has 0, offspring inherits roughly 2-3 of the 4 passives on average.
The breeding chain for perfect combat passives: Step 1: catch Pals with individual golden passives (Legend from Frostallion/Jetragon/Paladius/Necromus, Musclehead from wild, Ferocious from wild, Burly Body from wild). Step 2: breed them onto a 'bridge' species (like Chikipi — low breeding power means the average stays low while you stack passives). Step 3: breed the 4-passive bridge species with the target species's breeding partner to transfer all 4 passives onto the target.
Example — getting a perfect Jetragon with Legend + Musclehead + Ferocious + Burly Body Chain: Catch Jetragon (guaranteed Legend) + catch any Musclehead Pal → breed Jetragon + Musclehead Pal → offspring with Legend + Musclehead bred down to non-Legendary species → breed that offspring with a Ferocious + Burly Body Pal → 4-passive offspring → breed with target species's partner (for Jetragon: Jetragon + Jetragon, since it's Legendary and can't be bred via cross-species).
IV (Individual Values) inheritance
Every Pal has hidden IVs for HP, Attack, and Defense, ranging from 0-100 (displayed as percentage bonus at Level 50). Wild Pals have random IVs (0-100). Bred Pals inherit IVs from parents: each stat's IV is either inherited from parent A or parent B, with a small random variation (±5%). Two parents with high IVs = high IV offspring consistently. Two parents with bad IVs = bad offspring. Catch parents with visible high stats (compare same-species same-level — the one with more HP/Attack/Defense has higher IVs).
Breeding farm setup for max efficiency (10 eggs/hour)
One Breeding Farm = ~2 eggs per 10 minutes (1 egg per Cake cycle is ~5 minutes). But you need: wheat plantation (3x for Flour), berry plantation (2x for Cake + food), mill (Flour from Wheat), ranch with chickens (Eggs), ranch with cows (Milk), ranch with Beegardes (Honey), cooking pot (Cake production), electric kitchen (faster cake cooking at Level 40+), cooler box (stores Cake without spoilage).
Assign: 2 Anubis (handiwork for crafting and transporting), 1 Jormuntide Ignis (kindling for smelting + cooking Cake), 1 Petallia or Lyleen (planting), 1 Penking or Surfent (watering), 1 Frostallion Noct or Verdash (gathering). Missing any of these = Cake production bottleneck = eggs sitting in Breeding Farm unprocessed.
Common breeding myths: 'Same species breeds faster' — false, all egg cycles are 5 minutes regardless of species match. 'Rare Pals require rare parents' — false, breeding power formula means even common Pals can produce rare offspring. 'Alpha Pals breed better' — false, Alpha status doesn't pass to offspring and doesn't affect any inheritance. All Alphas are identical to normal Pals for breeding purposes (same breeding power).
